01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Rokuou-yu, situated in Saga Kitaboricho in Kyoto's Ukyo Ward, is known for its bracing firewood-heated baths and cold plunge pool. Tucked into the residential streets south of Rokuōin Station on the Keifuku Electric Railroad Arashiyama Main Line, the sento retains the traditional silhouette of an old-school neighborhood bathhouse, complete with smoke rising from its chimney.

The bathing hall houses shallow and deep baths alongside a cold plunge pool, with the water running decidedly hot throughout. While there is no sauna or open-air bath, patrons come specifically to alternate between brief soaks in the wood-fired hot water and refreshing dips in the cold pool. Seasoned tiling and straightforward fittings contribute to its unpretentious, retro character.

Operating hours run from 15:00 to 22:00, with Sundays closed. As shampoo, soap, and towels are not provided, bringing your own toiletries is recommended. It serves as a handy stop for a hot rinse after hiking Mount Atago or strolling through the Saga area.
